Born: 17 September 1947; New York, New York

Gail Carson Levine was raised in an artistic family — her father owned a commercial art studio and her mother wrote plays. She originally wanted to be a painter, but after graduating from City College of New York she worked in the social welfare field. She didn't discover she liked to write until she took a class on writing and illustrating children's book. She now writes and lives with her husband David, and their Airedale, Baxter, in the Hudson River Valley of New York State in a 200-yr-old farmhouse.
